Wednesday, February 7, 2007 1st Meeting with Mr. Tan Bee Thiam
What on earth is Moving Minds Lab about? What is the Asian Film Archive and what does it do? And most importantly, what are we suppose to do? How are we to advocate films?
All these were burning questions in our minds (no pun intended) before our first official meeting with the Executive Director of Asian Film Archive, Mr. Tan Bee Thiam. During our meeting with Mr. Tan, he answered all of our questions above and more. We got to briefly know about the Asian Film Archive, who they are, what do they do, and most importantly, why do they do it. Mr. Tan also introduced the various projects to us, and what it would be like, and what would be the main focus for our project -- Film Advocacy.
The most important, and useful, information that we got from the meeting was the "basics" of how films are being produced and distributed in Singapore. This bit of information was very crucial and very useful for us, as our project was directly related to how Asian/Singaporean films were being distributed in Singapore.
We felt that this meeting not only introduced us to our project, but also greatly aided us in steering us in the right direction as well as provided essential information that would prove greatly useful throughout our journey.
This meeting also helped us in crafting our draft proposal, as to how we would be going to approach and do our project.
On the whole, we felt that this meeting had really helped us a lot in every aspect, and it was a really great introduction, to our project journey, to have the Executive Director himself to sort of brief us and answer our queries regarding not only the project at hand, but all things related to it (i.e. the film industry, Singapore's film distribution, etc.). Therefore, without this crucial meeting, our process, up till now, would not have been so successful and fruitful; we could still have been frogs in a well.
